Hijack of dhow off Somalia’s Puntland indicator of deteriorating security environment, to advantage of would-be pirates

Ten armed pirates hijacked a fishing dhow close to the coastal town of Eyl in the northeastern Nugaal region of Puntland, Somalia, on 24 March. The dhow and its 13 Yemeni crew members were released the following day.

This incident follows the hijacking of tanker Aris 13 on 13 March, the first successful hijacking of a commercially significant vessel since May 2012. The ship and crew were released unharmed, following an operation by the Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF).
