Media reports today state that pirates attacked a VLCC around 80nm off Bonny, Nigeria, on Dec. 3rd, kidnapping 19 crew members. The crew were described by security sources as being 18 Indians and one crew member from Turkey. Seven crew were left on board the vessel, named as the Nave Constellation by the media.
Reports state that at around 1820 UTC, the vessel was boarded and the crew taken in position 03:05.5N-007:06.8E. There was no information regarding the number of attackers involved, although such a large number of hostages would presumably require additional attackers and guards.
The Gulf of Guinea is increasingly dangerous for the maritime sector, and this latest kidnapping will only reinforce calls for a unified response to maritime security in the region.
