Piracy: Attacks off Somalia followed closely by Mauritian operators


Six new pirate attacks were reported in the Indian Ocean off Somalia in March and April 2017. A zone particularly affected by piracy between 2005 and 2012. Nevertheless, thanks to international monitoring and protection mechanisms, Attempts at piracy were all thwarted and did not cause any injuries.

In Mauritius, freight forwarders monitor the situation closely. “Piracy has an impact on the cost of freight because the various precautions to take as well as the additional insurance incur an additional cost. These costs are substantial. The situation is still worrying, “comments Gupta Gopaul, president of the Professional Association of Freight Forwarders (APT).
